Cambodia’s Membership

ASEAN was appealing to Cambodia for its shared commitments and common responsibilities in pursuit of peace, stability, and prosperity based on the principles of independence, sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, and equitable treatment without imposition.

On 30 April 1999, Cambodia joined the ASEAN family and became the 10th member of this Association. Ever since, ASEAN has always been an integral part of Cambodia’s foreign policy. Cambodia has thus always been an active and constructive supporter and contributor to the ASEAN Community-building process for broadening and deepening economic, political, security, and socio-cultural cooperation and development to ensure that ASEAN is a community of opportunities, a rules-based community, fully integrated, people-centred, and people-oriented region and that no one is left behind.

Objectives of Cambodia’s accession to ASEAN:

  • Maximize opportunities to build friendly ties and cooperation within the region and beyond toward peace, stability, security, and socio-economic development of Cambodia;
  • Enhance Cambodia’s regional and international integration and standing as a responsible member of the international community;
  • Promote and expand Cambodia’s contribution in addressing regional and global challenges and in building a harmonious, peaceful, and prosperous world for all;
  • Uphold the value of peace in the region of Southeast Asia through Cambodia’s successful implementation of the win-win policy and the active engagement in UN peacekeeping;
  • Leverage on Cambodia’s steadfast socio-economic development progress and sustained high economic growth to accelerate regional integration and ASEAN Community efforts.
